Similar to the term “discriminate”, despite being defined in almost all contexts as a demarcated physical space or form of allowance (e.g. financial deposit, profit margin, margin of error), the concept of a “margin” became pejorative in the 1970s press. “Marginalize” meant to “make notes” in the edge of a book; by 1968, it had been perverted so broadly an article in The Los Angeles Times from June 20th of that year reported, “[T]he Negro was kept aside, marginalized, thus composing in its large majority the chronically poor.”
